The first Chevrolet Bolt EV made waves, winning MotorTrend’s Car of the Year award in 2017 and convincing car buyers that an EV could be reliable, affordable, and fun to drive. It was only a matter of time before Chevrolet gave the car-buying public a bigger, more powerful version.
Though sporting the same essential shape, the new Chevrolet Bolt EV is a bit wider and more than six inches longer (and 90 pounds heavier) than its predecessor.
The latest version, which the automaker is marketing as an EUV, generates 200 hp and 266 pounds per foot of torque, a noticeable upgrade. Mileage is comparable to the original (MotorTrend reports that the new Chevrolet Bolt EV gets just under 250 miles on a full charge, slightly less than the original).
People happy with the original version may find the upgrade visually appealing since the EUV is promoted as efficient but with more size and pick-up. It looks a bit more like an SUV may attract new customers, particularly those with families.
The new Chevrolet Bolt EV can travel 95 miles if enough charge remains in the battery. If your impression of an electric vehicle is a stodgy square on wheels that needs plenty of time to get going, the new Chevrolet Bolt EV’s zero-to-60 in under 7.0 seconds should dispel that image.
The new Bolt is an enjoyable, even novel, experience. If you’re new to electric vehicles, you may find it pretty cool that electricity can be fed back into the battery when the car decelerates.
The interior’s dominated by hard plastic, though it’s offset somewhat by ventilated seating, a welcome feature on those super-hot days. Legroom in front and back is generous, as rear-seat passengers will appreciate the car’s more than 39 inches of legroom.
The new Chevrolet Bolt EV is the first vehicle to offer a semi-autonomous cruising system for $2,200 (hands-free steering is also available). There’s none of the herky-jerky, stop-and-start action of older model cruise control systems. Infotainment and other tech features are controlled through a 10-inch touchscreen. Safety features include emergency braking, collision warning, and lane departure alerts.
